Foundry Case Study

The Foundry Project involved the creation and installation of signage for student accommodation in Leeds and was our 3rd project for the Host group. Originally, they had wanted something very similar to our Southampton project. Unfortunately, because of the design of this building’s outer skin, the building was too far advanced in its build stage to facilitate an illuminated sign of the size that they wanted, weighing around 150kg.

As a result, it quickly became apparent to our Sign Systems Consultant that a replacement sign needed to be extremely light in weight to ensure that the fixings were capable of supporting the required weight. The sign was to be utilised on both the North and West Elevations. Due to the fabric of the building and its late phase of build, a flexface type sign was recommended.

Building Design

The building itself was clad with a very thin metal rainshield, of approximately one-millimetre thickness. To install and attach the sign, we had to go through this rainshield to the superstructure and rainshield supports to get a good fixing.

Our design was agreed. A flexible PVC face was stretched around an aluminium frame. The PVC face was digitally printed to give a sharp, colour image.

Signage Installation

The installation itself involved powered access to operate at a high level, and also involved time consuming paperwork as a partial street closure was required for us to allow the access equipment to be parked on the highway.
