3D Built-up Letters.
Three dimensional architectural lettering really adds something the way a sign can look. With that third dimension to a flat cut letter many design opportunities are available and the one of the most important being that the lettering can be individually illuminated. Below there are some of the options we can manufacture.
LED Embedded Acrylic Lettering.
Five years ago this type of letter was not possible. Due to the development of LEDs particulary in their brightness and beam angle we can now achieve great lighting effects when the light source is only millimetres away from its background. The CNC machined acrylic letters are created with a recess on the rear face to which the LEDs are embedded. Before this operation the letters are subject to the desired paint finish. Mounted off locators the halo lighting effect has a broad umbra. A pin edge halo can be achieved by adding a translucent acrylic backplate.
Rim and Return.
The photograph to the right is an image of rim and return internally illuminated built up lettering. In this location where the letters were suspended on frames, the letters had to be structurally self supporting. This method of construction which comprises of a welded open channel shaped letter with a rim and return letter shaped frame which retains the acrylic face. LEDs were fitted internally to achieve a face illumination.
Channel Letters.
Often the client wants something a little different. At the Spanish Bar in our home town of Ilkeston the client asked if we could assist in the design of this old fashioned but at the same time quirky sign. Manufactured in a channel profile from descaled stainless steel the letters were treated to a stove enamel paint finish. Cabochon bulbs were fitted within the channel recess for an unusual lighting effect.
Brushed Stainless Steel Letters.
Architectural lettering within the office environment need to be a little more subtle and brushed stainless steel is perfect. Its grained, matt finish exude that quality look. Internally, LED modules may be fitted as the light source to a translucent perspex backplate. Smaller letters less than 60mm are too small to fabricate as this type of three dimensional letter. Our solution is to CNC machine clear acrylic letters and flame polish their edges. For smaller letters we have a laser machine for that two in one process. After fixing to the wall the laser cut brushed stainless steel faces are simply bonded to the acrylic letters.
